Air Force Magazine’s “Daily Report” is rife with mention of fiscal concerns.  A key interest item is called Efficiency Experts Take Over, and references Lieutenant General  Miller, deputy chief of staff for strategic plans and programs, and his perspective that operating with more efficiency is key.

Some initiatives being looked at by the Air Force (and some to consider for your own organizations) include:

*Consolidating personnel into fewer facilities

*Emphasizing newer, more efficient buildings

*Renewable energy production on base (wind, solar, etc.)

*AFSO21:  a combination of lean, Six Sigma, and Air Force quality initiatives

*The Air Force IDEA program, where members suggest better business practices

*Business Intelligence

*Automation and streamlining of processes

What I find interesting about the drive towards efficiency is that we have been talking about it for years. We have built processes for it for years. Outside of our formal AFSO21 process however, we don't really pause in our day-to-day operations and really try to figure out how to optimize our work. Efficiency needs to become ingrained as a core component of our culture.
